Ajé Culture Red Palm Oil is unrefined red palm oil from Kailahun District in eastern Sierra Leone, finished and packed in Freetown, and imported direct to Australia by Aje Culture Global Pty Ltd. One district, one supplier partner, one batch at a time. Available in 5, 10 and 20 litre formats for kitchens and food service.

Red Pamine

Look at the front of the container and you will find the words RED PAMINE. Pamine is how palm oil is spoken of in Sierra Leone. The label carries the name the oil already has where it comes from, next to the one it goes by here.

Our story

It begins in the east

Kailahun District, Sierra Leone

In the east of Sierra Leone, near the Guinea and Liberia borders, palms stand among cassava and yams, planted by people who are no longer alive, cut and carried as they have been for generations.

The fruit is grown and pressed there. The oil comes out the colour of rust and firelight.

Then it travels west

Freetown

The oil travels before it travels. From Kailahun it comes west across the country to a yard on the Atlantic edge of Freetown, where a small team finishes it, fills it and seals it by hand.

East to coast. Coast to Melbourne.

One container at a time

Freetown

One origin, one supplier partner, one batch at a time. Every consignment is tested and documented before it is sealed into a single container and shipped.

The first ran to twenty-four thousand litres, and it was called Aminata. Batches carry names here, not numbers.

Why this exists

This oil has always travelled badly. It arrives in Australia inconsistent, or late, or not at all, and no one is accountable for it. Meanwhile the words “palm oil” have come to mean something here that has nothing to do with a smallholder grove in West Africa.

Not a range. Not a promise. One product, done properly, so the next one can be trusted.
